The initial competency assessment is the step between finishing your 40-hour training and submitting your RBT certification application, and it is the step candidates have the most questions about. With the BACB's updated RBT requirements in effect since January 1, 2026, the assessment has its own current packet, its own task list, and timing rules that trip people up when they plan backwards from an application date.
This article walks through the 2026 assessment as the BACB publishes it: who can assess you, what the 19 tasks cover, which parts must be demonstrated with a real client, and how the 90-day window interacts with the rest of your application. It complements our broader guides on Florida RBT requirements in 2026 and what to expect in a competency assessment.
One framing note before the details: the assessment is not a second exam designed to filter you out. It is a structured demonstration, with a qualified professional, that you can actually do the things your training covered. Candidates who treat it that way prepare better and worry less.
Who can administer the assessment
Under the 2026 requirements, your responsible assessor must be an actively certified BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the BACB's 8-hour supervision training. The assessor must have an employment or contractual relationship covering the applicant and any clients involved in the assessment.
Assistant assessors are permitted for parts of the process: an assistant must hold an active RBT certification or higher and must have demonstrated proficiency in the relevant tasks through direct observation. The responsible assessor remains accountable for the assessment as a whole.
Practically, this means your assessor is usually a BCBA at the agency where you work or intend to work. If you completed your 40-hour training independently and are not yet attached to an agency, securing an assessor is your next step, and it is exactly the situation our competency assessment service exists for.
The 19 tasks and five domains
The 2026 Initial Competency Assessment packet organizes 19 tasks into five domains. Measurement covers three tasks: continuous measurement, discontinuous measurement, and data entry with graphing. Assessment covers two: preference assessments and ABC data collection.
Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction is the largest domain at nine tasks, including discrete-trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, chaining, shaping, discrimination training, prompting and prompt fading, token systems, crisis or emergency procedures, and a choice among antecedent procedures, differential reinforcement, and extinction. Professionalism and Requirements covers five tasks: session notes, client dignity, professional boundaries, supervision requirements, and responding to clinical direction.
Each task can be assessed by observation with a client, by role-play, or by interview, with one important constraint: at least three of tasks 6 through 14, the skill acquisition and behavior reduction procedures, must be demonstrated with a real client. You cannot complete the entire assessment as a conversation.
The timing rules that catch people
Two clocks matter. First, the assessment can only happen after your 40-hour training is complete. Second, it cannot be completed more than 90 days before you submit your RBT certification application. Finish the assessment in April and apply in September, and the assessment is stale: you would need to complete it again.
The planning consequence runs backwards from your application date. Line up your assessor and, if client observation is part of your assessment, the client sessions, so that the assessment lands inside the 90-day window with room to spare for scheduling slips. Candidates who treat the assessment as the last errand before applying have the right instinct; candidates who complete it early to get it out of the way create their own deadline problem.
The other 2026 changes around the credential are covered in our Florida RBT requirements guide: the updated 40-hour training standards, the new exam content outline, and the two-year recertification cycle with 12 professional development units for those certified in 2026 onward.
How to prepare, domain by domain
For measurement: be ready to take frequency and duration data live, run a partial-interval or momentary time sampling procedure, and plot data points on a graph by hand or in the agency's system. Practice narrating what you are measuring and why; assessors probe understanding, not just execution.
For assessment tasks: know how to run a paired-choice or multiple-stimulus preference assessment and how to record antecedent, behavior, and consequence in an ABC format that another professional could read. For the skill acquisition and behavior reduction tasks, rehearse the procedures you use least. Most candidates are fluent in prompting and DTT from their fieldwork and rustier on chaining, shaping, or discrimination training; the assessment covers all of them.
For professionalism: session notes are the task candidates most often underestimate. Write practice notes that are objective, complete, and free of interpretation, and review what client dignity and professional boundaries require in concrete situations, not just as definitions. If you want structured practice before the real thing, our clinical team runs preparation and assessment sessions in English and Spanish.

This article summarizes the BACB's published 2026 materials as of late September 2026, and the BACB's own documents control. Read the current RBT Initial Competency Assessment packet and the RBT 2026 requirements document before you schedule anything, and bring questions to your assessor.
If anything here conflicts with a newer BACB publication, follow the BACB. Certification requirements are primary-source territory: a blog post, ours included, is a map and not the terrain.
